Die 1853 gegründete University of Melbourne ist Australiens zweitälteste Universität. Dementsprechend renommiert und bekannt ist sie als eine der bedeutendsten Forschungsuniversitäten im asiatischen Raum. Einer von vielen ist Sir Macfarlane Burnet, der den Nobelpreis in Medizin für seine Arbeit am menschlichen Immunsystem erhalten hat.
Die University of Melbourne gehört zu der Group of Eight, dem Zusammenschluss der acht größten australischen Forschungsuniversitäten und wurde vom Good Universities Guide 2001- 2002 zur Universität des Jahres gekürt.
